You can pretty much watch it move (though I'm not sure I recommend it -- hard on the eyes!).

The reason the sunward side looks so much redder is that that's where the strongest light is coming from, and the light that's getting through is red. The actual amount of light in front of you and behind you is probably close to the same, but because of the angle and distance, the light when you're facing the sun looks red. The reason for that is that as the sun gets closer to the horizon the light from it has to travel through more air -- and airborne particles. Dust, smoke, smog, water vapor, whatever. With the airborne schmutz acting as a filter, more of the shorter wavelengths of the spectrum (violet, indigo, blue, green) are reflected back toward the source leaving a higher percentage of the longer wavelengths (yellow, orange, red) to penetrate. With a heavy bias toward the red end of the spectrum, you get that reddish-orange light that you see here. The "normal" looking light behind you is probably (I'm theorizing now I haven't actually read this part anywhere) owing to the curvature of the Earth -- and the atmosphere -- reflecting the light coming both directly from the sun, and reflected off the ground/water in a non-linear fashion. But I don't know the exact scientific principle to explain it.Mojohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03498213932233245032noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32243735.post-61852177237999156132009-03-19T14:14:00.000-05:002009-03-19T14:14:00.000-05:00A wonderful photo essay, beautiful and amusing too!...A wonderful photo essay,
beautiful and amusing too!
Thank you for the pleasure of being taking along. :-)Merisihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16781937797213521146noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32243735.post-1736549125351901852009-03-19T14:11:00.000-05:002009-03-19T14:11:00.000-05:00Complete awesomeness!!!
